accelerants left inside. the suspect, 24-year-old james holmes, will be spending tonight in a county jail in suburban denver. he's scheduled to appear in court monday morning. a couple of hours ago, police disclosed holmes received what they call a, quote, high volume of deliveries in recent months. they think that's how he amassed the huge amount of ammunition for his attacks. cnn's ed lavendera is just outside the holmes' apartment complex in aurora. and what are the police and the bomb squads doing right now? >> reporter: well, wolf, it's been a very active last few hours here in this neighborhood. that red brick building you see behind me just to the left of that white truck, that is the building where 24-year-old james holmes lived. and that was where the apartment was that was trapped. they've spent a great deal of time. you heard that explosion. that was deliberately set off by the bomb squad here to begin to try to begin the process of dismantling the trip wires and what they call a very sophisticated setup inside that apartment that could have been very deadly. b

his contact with james holmes was weird and even bizarre. let's get to drew griffin who joins us now in denver on the phone. what are you learning? >> interesting thing. james holmes replied online on june 25th to join a private gun range out in colorado about a half hour drive from where he was living. and the owner there called back and got a message on james holmes' message machine that he described as very weird almost as if the person leaving the message was drunk, just weird and bizarre, a deep gutteral forced voice on the message machine. he said to his staff this guy doesn't get anywhere near our range until i meet him personally. he told one of our producers he didn't know if this guy was an idiot or what was happening. it was only after the killing that his staff and remembered the name that this guy had applied online and found out this is indeed the guy who applied online to join our gun range and had this very, very odd message machine at his home. it is bits and pieces but we now know that james holmes was at least trying or attempting to get to a gun range to practice

and more investigating of suspect james holmes, there has been no rest. they continued collecting evidence today, a day after disarming the apartment where he lived. police saying it was set up to kill or seriously injury whom ever entered. i spoke with police chief daniel oats earlier about effort to preserve the evidence. >> that was extremely high priority over the last two days, we wanted the evidence in that, inside that apartment and we've taken custody of the computer, the potential that we might get evidence out that have computer is, well, it's very important to us, but, every ounce of evidence will just help us hold this person accountable. so, it was a very, very high priority that we cover evidence and i'm so grateful that we had the bomb professionals from the feds and our local agencies to help us do that. it was a great relief, and we've mitigated the hazard and that we would start that evidence and i suspect we'll be sifting through that evidence for months. >> we'll hear more of that evidence from chief oats later in the hour. as for holmes, the 24-year-old is currently in

they definitely feel like the most troubling aspects and the most troubling devices they found in james holmes' apartment have been diffused and they want to remove those devices and take them to secure locations so if there need to be other det nations and taken apart and dismantled they can do that in more secure environments instead of this apartment. now what happens is the collection of evidence. authorities here want to go through his belongings and his computers and that sort of thing trying to find any kind of evidence that would help him explain how he prepared and what led to this massacre in aurora, colorado, so all of that work continues. we're seeing the local firefighters that were here starting to clean up the hoses that were brought in as a precaution, but all of the investigators and bomb technicians are still here. they say there still is several more hours of work to do inside that apartment and the material that they want to get out. they also want to begin assessing just exactly what james holmes put in there. they weren't exactly sure what kind of materials he had been us

colleagues have spoken to the woman that lives just below james holmes and is obviously one of the people that had been evacuated. she explained to us the night of the shooting that there was loud music emerging from james holmes apartment and that she had gone up there to knock on the door and at one point had called authorities to let them know about that, but they said they were too busy with the shooting and they couldn't spare someone to come over here and do that, but she said the door was unlocked and told us the door was unlocked. obviously, she's very emotional about the fact she easily could have opened up that door and who knows what would have happened if she had done that. so luckily, for her, she decided not to do that and went back downstairs, but a lot of this area remains cordoned off and remains shut down. at one point, it would allow authorities to come back and james holmes' apartment, that will be shut down for quite some time and i'm not sure whether the surrounding areas will be opened up here in the coming days. obviously, the people whoive around this area are pro
